We are happy to share exciting news with you regarding FACET-II. The beam commissioning at FACET-II is projected to start in early September. Stage one completes a new photo-injector at Sector 10 and re-establishes operations with high-energy high-brightness electron beams. Approved user programs will be scheduled for installation and commissioning in the fall of 2020; the start of the science programs is projected for winter-spring 2021.

FACET-II is a National User Facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory that will provide the Department of Energy with unique capabilities to develop advanced acceleration and coherent radiation techniques with high-energy electron and positron beams. FACET-II is built on the decades-long experience developed conducting advanced accelerator R&D at the FFTB and FACET and will re-deploy HEP infrastructure in continued service of its mission. FACET-II provides a major upgrade over the capabilities we enjoyed at FACET.

With this letter, we are calling for the second cycle of proposals that will be reviewed by the FACET-II Program Advisory Committee (PAC) October 26-29, 2020. The PAC will be chaired by Edda Gschwendtner from CERN and asked to review new proposals, assess priorities for initial experimental operations, and evaluate facility development plans. To receive full consideration we ask that your proposal be submitted by Monday, September 15, 2020. As you develop your proposal, we encourage you to coordinate with us to ensure the best match between your requests and anticipated capabilities at FACET-II. Recommendations from the PAC will be used to guide priorities for run time scheduling, as well as for developing and introducing facility improvement plans.

The FACET-II Technical Design Report and details of the proposal process including a proposal template may be found at the FACET-II website.

Physical Review Accelerators and Beams is publishing a special collection on proposed extreme beam physics experiments on the FACET-II facility at SLAC.

Collaborations with new proposals have an option to present a paper to be considered as part the collection. Papers submitted to PRAB will be peer-reviewed through the normal refereeing procedure, and if accepted for publication will then be published as regular PRAB articles and as part of the FACET II special collection.

We are looking forward to working with you on this important and exciting science program. Please feel free to forward this email to colleagues you feel may be interested.

Christine Clarke, Mark Hogan, and Vitaly Yakimenko

AGENDA:

The 2018 PAC reviewed 35 proposals: 7 received an excellent ranking, 23 were ranked as very good or good, 2 were ranked as fair and 3 were not ranked or asked to resubmit.

The experimental area has been constructed to accommodate as many experiments as possible with priority given to the proposals that received an excellent ranking. The proposals prioritized from the 2018 PAC have yet to receive beam time and most will not be reviewed at the 2020 PAC.

The 2020 PAC meeting has three primary purposes:

1. Communicate the status of the FACET-II facility, experimental area, and the plans for commissioning towards first experiments in 2021

2. Review the new proposals submitted since the 2018 PAC meeting

3. Review the status of experiments expected to receive beam time in the next 6-9 months that require significant experimental installations
